Meridian is now registering participants in Mental Health First Aid for Adults to be held Tuesday, July 12, at the Gainesville Police Department, located at 545 NW 8th Avenue. This eight-hour training will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a one-hour break for lunch. Course fees are $40 per participant. Pre-registration is required. Similar to First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for medical emergencies, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) trains participants to identify and respond through a five-step action plan to potential mental illness or substance use disorders until appropriate professional help can arrive. Topics covered include: emotional problems, depression, crisis first aid for suicidal behavior, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, acute stress reaction, psychotic disorders, substance abuse disorders, eating disorders and self-injury. Completion of each course earns participants Mental Health First Aider certification (valid for three years) through the National Council on Behavioral Health. Certification is ideal for educators, school administrators, community volunteers, church groups, day care staff, social service providers, business leaders and companies, organizations and individuals dealing directly with the public.
