Substance Abuse / Addiction Services
Evidence Based Prevention Programs
These programs provide community activities and education aimed at preventing substance abuse, including structured, drug-free activities to those identified as having risk factors for substance abuse. Services involve multiple contacts over a specific period of time to reinforce and promote positive, drug-free behaviors. Many services are provided directly in the schools. Parents become integral parts of these efforts as they participate in homework assignments and other aspects of the prevention activities through the evidenced-based curriculum.
Services are science-based, using two models: Families That Care-Guiding Good Choices and Faith-Based Initiatives in the African-American Communities. Late night basketball, Stop the Violence rallies and other universal prevention activities are used to prevent substance use and other at-risk behaviors.
Education initiatives teach individuals about the dangers and results of substance abuse, building resiliency by emphasizing quality decisions. Educational material focuses on conflict resolution, critical analysis, decision-making, and life and drug use refusal skills.
Structured leisure activities promote alcohol-free social events. The program also educates parents; influences the media to reach out to parents; involves businesses, churches, employers and schools in delivering education and support to parents and offers counseling during life transitions and supports parents in making appropriate decisions.
